Lecanora sulfurescens Fée

  Thallus thin, plane, continuous to rimose-areolate, yellowish white to yellowish grey, epruinose. Soredia absent. Prothallus not visible. Apothecia immersed when immature, becoming subimmersed to slightly sessile, 0.3–0.6 (–1.1) mm diam.; disc pale orange to yellowish brown, not or slightly pruinose; margin concolorous with the thallus, thin to thick, entire. Cortex distinct, hyaline, ±gelatinous, inspersed with small crystals, 10–15 µm thick laterally and 20–25 µm thick basally. Amphithecium with large crystals insoluble in KOH (pulicaris-type). Parathecium hyaline, 10–15 µm thick, with numerous small crystals soluble in KOH. Epihymenium orange-brown to olive, c. 10–15 µm thick, with crystals (pulicaris-type); pigmentation soluble in KOH. Hymenium, subhymenium and hypothecium hyaline. Paraphyses sparingly branched and thickened apically. Ascospores narrowly ellipsoidal to ellipsoidal, 10.0–13.5 × 5.5–7.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: Thallus and apothecial margin K+ yellow, C–, Pd+ yellow; containing atranorin (major), gangaleoidin (major), chloroatranorin (minor), chlorolecideoidin (minor), leoidin (minor) and norgangaleoidin (trace).
     
  Occurs on siliceous rocks at coastal sites in eastern Qld. A pantropical species.
